Ten Days on the Island, Tasdance and Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place

mapali – Dawn Gathering

8 March 2019 7AM

CALLOUT FOR LOCAL CHORAL GROUPS AND CHORAL PERFORMERS (12+)

To mark the beginning of Tasmania’s state-wide festival, local performers and community will gather en masse to participate in the festival’s opening event. Mapali – Dawn Gathering is inspired by the elements that surround us on this extraordinary Island –the sea, the winds, the landscape and the community itself. Together on the beach in Devonport we will share the sunrise, pay respect to the Traditional Custodians of the Country upon which our festival takes place, celebrate International Women’s Day and…open our festival.

The event will be co-created by director Lindy Hume, choreographer Adam Wheeler and artist/cultural adviser David mangenner Gough. Lindy, Adam and David are artistic directors of (respectively) Ten Days on the Island, TasDance, and Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place.

For this event we are inviting choral groups and singers of all styles and levels of experience to participate in an a cappella choral section composed and directed by local musician Teresa Beck-Swindale. Please note that this event takes place outdoors on the beach.

Participants will need to be available for the following rehearsals:
