Festival Opening

To mark the beginning of our epic Festival adventure, Ten Days on the Island has invited hundreds of local performers and community groups to gather en masse from across the North of the island at dawn, to breathe as one in a shared moment of reflection and ritual.

Join us for an unforgettable experience, celebrating the first light of day with music, dance, performance and poetry inspired by the elements that surround us – the sky, the sea, the winds and the landscape.

This unique community performance and ceremony in three parts takes place on the beach – so be prepared to take off your shoes and move around during the event. Wear something warm if it’s chilly.

PART ONE, narrated and led by David mangenner Gough, a Welcome to Country ceremony will acknowledge the significance and history of the North West coastline to its Traditional Custodians and local Aboriginal communities.

Following the Welcome ceremony, PART TWO celebrates the opening of the 2019 Festival and features community performers including:

Slipstream Circus (Ulverstone)

mapali Dawn Gathering Community Choir, director Teresa Beck-Swindale

Burnie Taiko – Guy Dean, leader – and Taiko Oni Jima (Launceston)

Dancers from Reflexions Dance Studio (Burnie), Wynyard High School and St Brendan Shaw College (Devonport)

The festivities finish with PART THREE, a joyful ritual led by David mangenner Gough and local community members, performed with respect for our shared community and in celebration of International Women’s Day 2019.

The event is co-created by Adam Wheeler and Lindy Hume, Artistic Directors of Tasdance and Ten Days on the Island, in collaboration with artist and cultural adviser David mangenner Gough and music coordinator Teresa Beck-Swindale

Set your alarm early on 8 March (International Women’s Day) if you want to secure a good vantage point, because mapali – DAWN GATHERING begins as the sun rises at 7AM.
