A Message from Our Artistic Director

I keep thinking about a night in Rowella.

It was a small hall, maybe sixty people. The performer was mid-sentence when, through an open window, a kookaburra started up. The whole room held its breath. Nobody moved. The performer paused, smiled, and let the bird finish. Then carried on. The audience exhaled together.

That’s what this Festival does. Not every time, and never on command, but often enough that people drive two hours on a weeknight to sit in a hall they’ve never been to, next to someone they’ve never met, and leave feeling like something has changed.

We can’t manufacture those moments, but we can create the conditions for them. We can say yes to the bold idea, book the hall, invite the artist, and trust that something will happen when people gather around stories worth telling.

This is what your support makes possible. Not a programme or a budget line. It’s a room full of people, feeling something together.

Thank you.
